Harry W. Dixon
Glens Falls, NY – Harry William Dixon, age 86, passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at the Slate Valley Center in Granville.
Harry was born on October 19, 1932 in Delmar, NY the son of the late Harry and Rebecca Dixon.
Harry graduated from Bethlehem High School and Hartwick College with a bachelor's degree in Business Management.
He was a member of the Christ Methodist Church on Bay Street in Glens Falls, NY Runners Club and a past member of the YMCA Board; also serving as Chairman.
He was a proud veteran of the US Army serving from 1955-57.
Harry's focus was insurance. He was a founder or partner in several area insurance companies. He started Associates of Glens Falls Insurance Company in the basement of his home, with friend and partner Gerald B. H. Solomon, which they eventually sold to their partners. He was a sales manager for a branch office of the Glens Falls Insurance Co. and founder of North Country Specialty Risk Insurance. After his retirement he moved to West Palm Beach where he worked with his son Kevin at Kevin's agency Dixie Commercial Insurance.
Over his lifetime he ran in more than 100 marathons, with repeated appearances in the Boston and New York marathons. He loved his life in the Adirondacks. He had a camp on Lake George where he enjoyed boating and hiking in the mountains. After moving to West Palm Beach, he loved spending time on the beaches there.
In his retirement years he learned the art of crafting jewelry and enjoyed selling it at flea markets. He still created jewelry during his stay at the Slate Valley Center.
Harry is survived by his son, Kevin Dixon and his life partner Debbie Sullivan of Glens Falls, and Kevin's mother Norma Brayton Dixon. He is also survived by a brother Robert.
There will be no service at this time. Arrangements were entrusted to the Robert M King Funeral Home in Granville, NY. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Slate Valley Center for the wonderful care extended to Harry during his stay.
