Marie Williams Obituary

Marie Helen (Rathbun) Williams

GRANVILLE, NY — Marie Williams, a beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 22, 2024. Born on August 3, 1935, in Granville, NY, she was the cherished daughter of Harold Rathbun and Grace McMahon and the sister of the late Patricia Smith.

Marie is survived by her son, Michael Williams, and his wife, Kelly, of Gilbert, AZ; her sister, Christine Keating, of Queensbury, NY; and her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in 2003 by her devoted husband of 46 years, Wayne Williams.

Marie and Wayne's love story began in high school in Granville, where they met and later married on October 27, 1956. A bright and talented student, Marie graduated as salutatorian of the Granville High School Class of 1953 and showcased her musical talent as a clarinetist in the GHS band. She remained a dedicated member of her class reunion committee, always eager to reconnect and celebrate lifelong friendships.

Marie dedicated many years of her professional life to Telescope Casual Furniture in Granville, where she built strong relationships with coworkers. After retiring, she continued to stay active by working part-time at The Orchard Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

A lover of the outdoors, Marie cherished summers spent camping with her family at Lake St. Catherine State Park and later relaxing at the family camp on Tinmouth Pond in Vermont. She was happiest in the company of loved ones, treasuring moments shared with her family and her extensive circle of friends.

Known for her boundless generosity, Marie gave freely of her time and resources to anyone in need. Her home was always filled with love and her cherished pets—cats and dogs who were like family. A passionate animal lover, she was a steadfast supporter of animal welfare.

Marie was also a pillar of her community, actively participating in local and social organizations and devoting over 70 years as a faithful member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Granville.

A memorial service to honor Marie's life will be held on Friday, December 6, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Granville, NY, followed by burial at Mettowee Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Marie's memory to the ASPCA or a local animal shelter, reflecting her lifelong love for animals.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Deb Pauquette and the wonderful staff at Holbrook Adult Home for their compassionate care and support.

Marie's warmth, kindness, and unwavering spirit will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know her.
