Obituary of Dorothy C. Somich Dorothy C. Somich, 98, of Granville, passed away on March 2, 2025, at Rutland Regional Medical Center in Vermont. Dorothy was born on March 14, 1926, in Plattsburgh, NY, to Marguerite "Peg" (King) Carpenter and Lyle Carpenter. After graduating from high school, Dot attended Cortland State Teachers College, where she graduated in 1947. She then worked as a Physical Education teacher in Granville, NY. In 1971, she earned a Master's Degree from the State University of New York at Brockport and later taught Physical Education and Health at Whitehall School District. As a young girl and woman, Dottie enjoyed skiing, swimming in Lake Champlain, playing tennis, and beating the boys at sports. She also served as a camp counselor for the Girl Scouts during the summers. Dottie met Stephen Somich at Harry's Bar & Restaurant in Granville, and they married later that year, on December 26, 1949. They were married for 50 years until Steve's passing in 2000. Together, they had five children, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Later in life, Dot enjoyed going to antique auctions, refinishing furniture, investing in the stock market, and taking trips to Maine with her daughter. She also loved gardening, playing bridge, "tile rummy," and various other games. Dot was also an enthusiastic fan of horse racing. Dot is survived by her sons, Michael and his wife Rosemary Somich of Raleigh, NC; Stephen and his wife Irma Somich of Saratoga Springs, NY; Thomas and his wife Catherine Somich of Granville, NY; Peter and his wife Isabelle Somich of Ocala, FL; and daughter Marguerite and her husband Robert Corazza of Montville, NJ. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Elizabeth Somich Morgan, Stephen Somich, Michael Somich, Philip Somich, Peter John Somich, Mary Beth Somich Fish, Frank Somich, and Nicholas Corazza; and great-grandchildren: Hannah Morgan, Abigail Morgan, Jack Morgan, Lily Somich, Isabel Fish, Maxton Somich, and Noah Somich. She is also survived by her brother, Charles Carpenter. Dot was predeceased by her husband Stephen, her parents Marguerite and Lyle Carpenter, her brother Robert Carpenter, and two daughters-in-law, Diane Somich and Beth Adams. A Catholic funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Granville, NY, on March 15 at 11 AM. Visiting hours will be held on March 14, 2025, from 4-6 PM at Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church Street, Granville, NY. Burial will take place in the spring at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Granville. The funeral arrangements are being handled by Robert M. King Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Slate Valley Museum in Granville, St. Mary's Church in Granville, or the Granville Rescue Squad. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Becky Cosey for her seven years of care for Dot, as well as to Holbrook Adult Home for three years of care, and Equinox Terrace in Manchester for seven months of care.
