Millie Canning Obituary
Mildred (Millie) Marjorie (Atkinson) Canning passed away in her favorite place, her home, on the evening of March 6, 2025 four months shy of her 95th birthday. Millie was born on the 27th of July 1930 to Roy and Anna (Therrian) on a farm located on Bunker Hill in Chateaugay, NY. Although born as a country girl Mom sought "big city" life in Plattsburgh, NY as a teenager when she went to live with her Aunt Doris.
Mom met her husband Bob downstate NY in 1954, they married and eventually made their way to Granville, NY which she lived her entire life. She met her lifelong friends, Theresa & Peggy shortly after they settled on Broadview Terrace.
She was a devout Catholic her whole life (& was a member of the Catholic Daughters). She worked for 27 years with Dr. Bernard Morse in his dental practice as his receptionist/assistant. Throughout the years Bob & Millie traveled internationally and domestically and they also owned a second home in Deland, FLA, but her real love was her home in Granville, her flowers & her family. Some years ago, Millie received a Garden Club award in recognition of her amazing green thumb which she was very proud of.
She helped raise her cherished grandchildren, Nathaniel, Matthew, Ashleigh, Logan & Molly.
There really wasn't much that could stop Millie. She loved staying busy, and always kept moving and that was her mantra especially in her later years.
She will be missed very much. Left to share her memories are her sister Hilda Secore of Medina, NY. Her children Edward (Kate) Canning, Rupert, Vt., Cheryl (Paul) Woodruff, Wells, Vt & Pamela O'Brien, Glens Falls, NY. Her beloved grandchildren Nate (Shelley) Woodruff, Matthew Woodruff, Ashleigh Woodruff, Logan & Molly O'Brien and great grandchildren Camden & Jace Woodruff. She is survived by many Atkinson & Canning nieces & nephews. Millie was predeceased by her husband Bob and her brothers Floyd, Hector & Maynard Atkinson.
The Rite of Committal will be at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Middle Granville, NY
A funeral mass will be celebrated at noon on Monday, April 28 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 23 Bulkley Avenue, Granville, NY with the Rev. Paul Powhida officiating. Calling hours will be at 11:00 until mass.
