Davis Aldous Hicks was born on October 27, 1954, and spent most of his life in Granville, NY. In his early years, he was a young member of the Pine Hill gang, growing up surrounded by more than fifty fun-loving kids each day.
A gifted marksman, Davis went on to become an avid competitive shooter who earned numerous accolades throughout his career. He won the Canadian National Championships multiple times and was a proud member of the NRA Long Range Black Powder Team. Davis represented his sport on the world stage, making the World Team three times, and traveling as far as Africa to compete. His greatest competitive achievement came in 2003, when he earned international recognition by winning the individual title at Bisley, England.
Beyond his accomplishments in shooting sports, Davis was a man of many passions. He had a deep love for the outdoors—hunting, fishing, and ginseng digging were among his favorite pursuits. He carried a wealth of knowledge in the history of trapping and furs, as well as in the honey business, the gun trade, and hides. His keen ability to read people, combined with his sharp instincts, made him not only respected in his community but also an excellent businessman.
In addition to his wide range of skills and interests, Davis found his greatest joy in spending time with his children and grandchildren. Whether outdoors sharing his wisdom or simply gathered together as a family, he gave generously of his time, love, and laughter.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Karen; his four children: Marny Covino and her husband Thomas, along with their five children—Kathleen, Johnathan, Sarah, William, and Matthew; Jeremy Hicks; Stacy Gertis (Hicks) and her daughters, Adaline and Avery; and Cody Hicks and his wife Coleigh, with their son Colton. He is also survived by Karen's children: Steven Hall and Darcy Markussen and her husband Erik.
Additional survivors include his sister Charlotte and her husband Fred, his brother Frank (Joe) Hicks, his close friend Frank Monikowski and wife Linda, as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and other extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.
Davis was predeceased by his parents, Davis and Georgiana Hicks, and Karen's parents, Donald and Claire Hamilton.
He will be remembered for his love of family, his deep connection to the outdoors, his dedication to his work and passions, and the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of Davis's life will be held Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at the Hartford Fire House from 1-5 pm. Come share stories with his family and have a bite to eat.
