James McCullen Obituary

James McCullen, 95, a ninety year resident of Granville, New York, passed away on September 23, 2025 at Delmar Gardens Assisted Living in Smyrna, GA with family by his side.

James (Jim) was born March 12, 1930, in Granville, New York, son of Michael and Martha (Zabroski) McCullen. Jim attended Granville High School and later joined the United States Air Force, served in the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in September 1954. He loved recounting stories of his travels and adventures overseas while in the service. Jim retired after 32 years as a Correction Officer for the State of New York. He was married to Dorothy Dennison for over 60 years until her death in 2017, together raising three children.

Jim enjoyed all sports, including hunting, fishing, and of course, golfing. He enjoyed carpentry and handyman work and many houses in the area have evidence of his workmanship. He took great pride in his yard and on several occasions won the yard of the month. Jim was a man of few words, but was extremely quick-witted and exhibited quite the sense of humor. He was always on the move and had a strong work ethic to do things the right way.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dorothy, whom he married in 1956, his parents, eight brothers, Michael, Pete, Henry, William, John, Jake, Frank and Larry McCullen, and two sisters, Mary Lockwood and Helen Marra.

Survivors include his two daughters, Tracey Cahill of Ledyard, CT; Allison Kohl and her husband Niels of Naples FL; and one son, Gary McCullen and his wife Tara of Atlanta, GA.

He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Sean Cahill, Scott Cahill, Kathryn Bringhurst, Elizabeth Logan, Emily McCullen, Megan Kohl and Brent Kohl, and four wonderful great-grandchildren: Paige Cahill, Caleb Cahill, Aubrey Cahill and Lavender Logan.

Jim was the youngest of eleven children (A baseball team and two cheerleaders as Jim used to say) and his wife Dorothy the oldest of 12 children which made for numerous nieces and nephews.
