Joan W. Mattison, Wells, Vermont
Joan W. Mattison, 83, of Wells, Vermont, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025.
Born on January 20, 1942 to Violet and Warren Woodard, Joan was raised in Granville, New York. Legend has it that she made her entrance into the world on a bale of hay in the family barn as the 11th of 12 children. Joan was a resilient spirit from a young age, always ready to take on any challenge.
In 1966, a few years after graduating from Granville High School, Joan met Carl Mattison of Manchester, Vermont, on a blind date. By August 1967, they exchanged vows at St. Mary's Church in Granville and quickly began to build their family. After welcoming their first son, Carl Jr., they moved to Wells in 1971, where they expanded their family with sons Don and Jeff. Known affectionately as "Joan" rather than "Mrs. Mattison," she was one of the many beloved moms of the neighborhood. Joan cherished her role in raising her sons in Wells and was an active participant in the Wells Swim Group and the annual Wells Carnival Pie Booth.
Joan was artistic, always painting or drawing, an animal lover and a wonderful cook. She was a member of the Thursday Night Girl's League of bowlers in the 1970s-80s at the Granville Lanes and had plenty of successful high-score games. She also dedicated many years to working as a nurse's aide at Granville Nursing Home before establishing her own home-cleaning and elder-assistance business, which she ran until her retirement, always wanting to care for others first.
She also took great joy in attending her sons' sports games, stock car races, art shows and other family activities like their annual trips to "The Camp" on Lake Champlain and trips to the coast of Maine. In her later years, Joan found immense happiness in helping care for her grandchildren Lane, Paisley, Colby, and Shelby, who were the apples of her eye. She took great pride in being a doting grandmother.
Joan was loved by everyone who knew her. She was opinionated yet kind, straightforward yet graceful, and above all, she was always there for her children, grandchildren, family and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Carl; her parents, Violet and Warren Woodard; her in-laws, Lois and Don Mattison; and many of her siblings. Joan is survived by her sons, Carl (Rob), Don (Lisa), and Jeff; her grandchildren, Lane, Paisley, Colby, and Shelby; her sisters, Gail and Virginia; her brother, Lynn (Susan); and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation for friends and family will be held at King Funeral Home in Granville, NY. from 5 PM until 7 PM on Tuesday, October 7th. A private family funeral will be held on Wednesday, October 8th.
In honor of Joan's vibrant spirit, attendees to either are encouraged to wear colorful, casual attire instead of traditional black, as she adored bright, cheerful colors, especially green. In lieu of flowers or donations, her family kindly requests your presence to celebrate her life.
