Eleanor "Ellie" Lemay Bean, 87, passed away peacefully on December 8th in the loving care of her daughter and son-in-law at their home in Killingworth, Connecticut. Ellie was born on September 21, 1938, in Greenfield, Massachusetts, during the historic hurricane of 1938.
Eleanor was the beloved daughter of Louis and Mable Lemay and grew up in Greenfield alongside her brother Skip. She graduated from Greenfield High School and continued her studies at Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts. It was there that she met the love of her life, David "Dave" Bean, beginning a partnership rooted in deep affection, mutual respect, and shared purpose. The two were married in 1960, and in 1964 they settled in Granville, New York, where they built not only a home but a life defined by devotion to one another and to their growing family.
Ellie had a remarkable eye for design and created warm, welcoming spaces that reflected her creativity, attention to detail, and love for beauty. Whether tending to her flower garden, decorating for the seasons, or a room until it felt just right, she created an environment with charm and care. Friends and family often marveled at her natural talent for transforming a home into a haven. Her creative gifts were also seen in the creation of greeting cards for family, friends and church activities.
Throughout her life, Eleanor worked as a bookkeeper, bank teller, and receptionist—roles in which she was known for her meticulous nature, reliability, and kindness. Yet it was beyond her professional life where Ellie's gifts were most profoundly felt. A loyal volunteer, dedicated friend, and enthusiastic golfer, she built lifelong connections through shared hobbies and community involvement. Many of her fondest memories were made on the golf course where she and Dave played weekly, and where Ellie won the Club Championship, or at crafting or card tables with her friends from the Methodist church and golf course, laughing, creating, and enjoying the moments that make up a life well lived.
Perhaps Ellie's greatest act of love was the care she gave to her husband Dave during the years he needed her most. She served as his primary caregiver with unwavering commitment, compassion, and tenderness. Her devotion was a testament to the strength of their bond and the true meaning of partnership. Even while caring for Dave, Ellie remained an extraordinary mom—offering guidance, comfort, and unconditional love.
Eleanor was predeceased by her parents, her brother Skip, and her beloved husband Dave. She is survived by her daughter Lori and son-in-law Lindsey of Killingworth, Connecticut; her son Chris and daughter-in-law Kim of Granville, New York; and her four grandchildren, Matt (Iana), Josh, Kaitlyn, and Zac (Hui). She also leaves behind five adored great-grandchildren—Laila, Lilly, Nicholas, Jackson, and Yolanda—as well as many nieces and nephews who will forever remember her warmth, humor, and gentle spirit.
In addition to her family, Eleanor's passing is deeply mourned by Jennifer Cohen, whose loving support and compassionate care brought Ellie comfort during her final months. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Jennifer, acknowledging the profound difference her presence made.
There will be a Celebration of Life, with burial to follow, in the Spring of 2026.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to The Parkinson's Foundation, an organization close to their hearts. Contributions may be made at parkinson.org.
