Roy David Sims Obituary

Roy David Sims, age 77, passed away at his home on March 16, 2026, following a brief illness.


Roy was born at the former Emma Laing Stevens Hospital in Granville, NY on June 29, 1948, the son of Henry T. and Myrtle (Shannon) Sims Jr.


He graduated from Malverne High School in Long Island in 1966. Following graduation he worked as a parts manager at a Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth dealer until 1976 when he moved to Vermont. He worked for Holcomb's Construction until business got slow in the 1990's, then went to WA Roberts Builders for 10 years and then back with Holcomb's Construction until 2009. While working for Holcomb's Construction, Roy built more than houses, he created an amazing relationship with his dearest friend, Richard A. Holcomb. In 2009 he was hired as a custodian at the Poultney High School and worked there until the present.


Roy loved nature. Hunting, fishing, hiking, ATV and snowmobile riding were all his passions.


He belonged to many organizations throughout the years, serving in many capacities. He gave his time and talents to many of them over the years. He was an NRA "Life Member," having joined in 1968. He was a light rifle marksman, sharpshooter, and expert. He joined the Granville Rescue Squad in 1982 and served through 2000. He was President of the squad in 1984 and Captain in 1986. He was a CPR instructor for both NY and VT. He was a SVTPB judge and shooter starting in 2005, and he did trail maintenance and posting for the WRASE Mountain ATV Club. He also belonged to the Birdseye Mountain ATC Club and served as a President in 2008. Roy joined the Coal Hollow Hunting Camp in 1993 and the Bald Ledge Hunting Club in Ticonderoga, NY in 1999.


Roy enjoyed many hours fishing and ice fishing in Cossayuna Lake and Lake St. Catherine. He was a member of the Adirondack Mountain Club and Green Mountain Club where he enjoyed many hikes.


Roy was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Henry Shannon Sims; a nephew, Randolph (Randy) Henry and lifetime friend, Richard A. Holcomb. Survivors are his sister, Ruth Marie (Sims) Henry and family; brother Gerard Alan & Margaret (Amato) Sims and family; step-children, Shawn Mead-Gluchacki and Alyson Mead-Gluchacki. In addition, his extended family; Karen Holcomb of Wells, VT and her family and Chris Anderson of Corinth, NY. As well as many nieces, nephews and extended cousins.


Friends may call on Sunday, March 22nd from 1-4 pm at the Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville. Burial will be later in the spring at the Wells Town Cemetery, Wells, VT.
