Josephine Ruth Taylor Schroeder
Hartford, NY – Josephine R. "Jo" Schroeder , age 94, passed away at Glens Falls Hospital on Saturday, June 23, 2018.
Jo was born on June 10, 1924 in Fort Edward, NY the daughter of the late Preston and Maude (Yarter) Taylor.
She graduated in 1942 from the Hartford Central School. She attended Cortland College.
Jo married Gerald Schroeder of East Syracuse on April 15, 1947 at the Hartford Baptist Church.
They bought the farm next to her parents from Andrew Kilday and began Jo-Jerry Registered Holstein Farm. Together they operated the farm until 1986 when it was taken over by their daughter Barbara and her husband Larry. And to this day it is still run by family.
Jo was always determined, enthusiastic, driven and energetic about all she did. She was a great mother, cook, homemaker and dairywoman. Until the age of 90, she remained a big part of the farm day.
Caring for her children, involvement in their education and the dairy cattle were things she put in the forefront of her life. She was a very spunky little woman. She was extremely proud of her family even as it grew to encompass grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She loved history. She was an avid reader whose chosen genre was historical novels. She was also a big fan of John Wayne movies. She was an antique buff which spilled over into an antique business. She also enjoyed cross country skiing at Crandall Park. Jo always looked forward to holidays with great anticipation as it was an opportunity for family dinners and to be surrounded by her family.
Jo was the caregiver for her husband Jerry for several years during his illness, until his death in 1993. And in turn, her family took care of her at the farm and she lived with grandson Jason and his family for the last 2 ½ years.
Jo was predeceased by her parents, her husband and sister Gladys Bell Taylor. Survivors are her daughter Barbara Beecher (Larry), daughter Pamela Helinski (John), son Mark Schroeder and son John Schroder (Tamara). She was blessed with eight grandchildren: Jason, Samantha, Bridget, Jackie, Johnna, Marie, Jerry and Cathy and eleven great grandchildren. Jo is also survived by two sisters Edna Hanna and Florence Steer as well as several nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at Noon at the Morningside Cemetery in Hartford, NY.
