Regina “Jean” Schoonover Duel

M. Granville, NY - Regina “Jean” Schoonover Duel, age 70, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2017 at Glens Falls Hospital.

Jean was born on January 19, 1947 in Lake George the daughter of James and Dorothy (Collins) Schoonover.

Jean graduated from Adirondack Community College as a Registered Nurse.  Her first job was at Glens Falls Hospital where she spent her entire 34- year nursing career. She was a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit.

Jean always felt that nursing was her calling from God.  As with most nurses she was extremely kind and caring. Glens Falls Hospital became a community for her. She was an excellent nurse. She always went that extra mile. She made and donated quilts for fundraising raffles for various causes through the hospital. At Christmas, she painted holiday scenes on large windows throughout the hospital to bring holiday cheer. She also made scrubs for her fellow nurses.

She loved gardening and nature in general. Her gardens boasted both vegetables and beautiful flowers. Most notable were her tomatoes. Her family kidded about how she appreciated help from them by mowing the lawn, but the sweetness disappeared when you ran over any of her flowers. Jean was always up for camping, just another chance to be outdoors.

Jean was very talented. She loved making cards. Her family always looked forward to birthdays and holidays when they would be the recipient of her creations. She also enjoyed the relatively new craze of “adult” coloring.

Jean was a caring and loving mother to her family. She taught them the important lessons they have used throughout their lives. Things such as you need to “pull yourself up by those boot straps” and get a grip. She was a strong, formidable woman and taught them to be the same. While being sweet and caring, it did not mean that she wasn’t a spitfire. If there was an opinion she felt needed sharing, she did not hesitate. She had a sense of humor that frequently was displayed through good natured “arguing” with her family.

She never really got the opportunity to travel that she wanted, but enjoyed doing so by watching the travel channel and dreaming of adventures.

Jean was predeceased by her parents, a brother and a sister Dorothy Beers. Survivors are her four children: Ronald Hungerford of Anchor Point, Alaska, Darcie Fiske (Glen) of Granville, Michelle Haner of Fort Edward, and Neal Hungerford (Michelle) of Cambridge. She was blessed with four grandchildren: Scott Hungerford (Tiffanie) Queensbury, Nikita Goliber (Joey) of Potsdam, Ronald Hungerford and his companion Cassie of Johnsburg and Amanda Hungerford and her companion Mike of Fort Edward and five great grandchildren Codie, Lucas and Mykenzie Hungerford, Cordelia Goliber and Sofia Hungerford. She also leaves behind a brother James Schoonover Jr. (Donna) of Lake George, and three sisters: Mary Wakely of PA, Marie Lashway of South Glens Falls and Bonnie Geary of SC. As well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 4 PM at the Robert M King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville. Friends may call from 2-4 PM at the funeral home. Following the service, a continued celebration of Jean’s life will be held at Penrhyn Hose Fire Company in Middle Granville.

The family suggests memorial donations to the C. R. Wood Cancer Center, 102 Park St. Glens Falls, NY 12801 in her name in lieu of flowers.
