Please share a memory of Vernon to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Vernon (Bud) E. Carabeau, Jr. 87, of Hartford, NY, passed away peacefully at his home with family on Monday, October 21, 2024. Bud was born January 10, 1937, to the late Vernon and Georgia Carabeau, Sr. Bud grew up in Danby, VT, and began his work career in the U.S. Army stationed in Hanau, Germany where he met his late first wife, Ursula G. Carabeau and moved his family back to the States in 1959. After his discharge from the service, he continued his career with his learned skills as a mechanic with the Ford Garage in Manchester, VT. Following his love of all things mechanical, he started a construction business, C&H (Carabeau & Howarth) Construction. From there he became a civil servant with the U.S. Postal Service and met his wife, Mildred (Millie) F. Carabeau (Moot) before he retired after 28 years as the Danby, VT rural carrier. One of the most endearing things he did was to give gifts to each child who wrote a letter to Santa each year. He always carried parcels to the doors of his patrons and looked after the elderly on his route. Christmas eve was a special day for him. He made it a point to wait for the late afternoon truck to come from the distribution center, gathered up any new packages and deliver them to his patrons before the holiday. In his adult years, Bud and Millie lived in Tinmouth and built a house together in Danby, VT. They moved to St. Agatha and Limestone, ME; and finally, Hartford, NY in their retirement years. They enjoyed their time together fishing, hunting, birdwatching, landscaping, and was always up for an adventure, especially traveling all over the United States in their truck and 5th wheel camper. Their trips to Alaska were their fondest memories. Together, Bud and Millie enjoyed making maple syrup in their retirement years and sharing their love of it with all the visitors who came to see their maple operation. They loved to go out to visit restaurants. Above all Bud cherished his time spent with family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His generous spirit was noted by all. Bud is survived by his seven children; Jo-Ann (Kirk) and Monica Latz, stepchildren - Rhonda, Laurie, Richard (Sarah), Theresa (Terry), Julie; eight cherished grandchildren: Joseph (Rebeca), Adam (Fawn), Emily (Chet), William (Tiffany), Katelynn (Daniel), Matthew, Margaret, and Henry; Five treasured great-grandchildren: Catherine, Carter, Reese, Gemma-Rose, and Dylan; Also left to cherish his memory are his sister Carolyn (Bunny) (Phil), brother Larry (Cris), brother Garry (Audrey), brother David and many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Bud was predeceased by his parents, Vernon and Georgia Carabeau, and wife Millie. Visiting hours will be held on November 1, 2024, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Robert M. King Funeral Home, located at 23 Church Street, Granville, NY. Burial service will be held on November 2, 2024, at the gravesite in the Scottsville Cemetery in Danby, VT at 11 am with a reception to follow at the Otter Creek Fun Center around 12pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The United Methodist Church of Hartford, NY. Bud was deeply loved and will be forever missed by all his family and friends.
